CBD and L-Theanine: A Case Study in Why Formulation Science Matters in Hemp Beverages

CBD and L-Theanine: A Case Study in Why Formulation Science Matters in Hemp Beverages

A new competitive advantage for brands

Flavor has historically been the foundation of beverage innovation. The hemp and functional beverage sector has a different competitive advantage rooted in formulation science, with success depending on understanding which ingredients complement each other, which ratios work, and how to create products that target a specific experience.

As the functional beverage market continues to expand, brands are increasingly exploring combinations of cannabinoids, botanicals, amino acids, and other wellness-focused ingredients designed around specific consumer needs, including relaxation, stress support, focus, and sleep.

The question is whether these combinations reflect a defined formulation strategy or simply a collection of trending ingredients on a label.

A recent report on the combination of cannabidiol (CBD) and L-theanine highlights the importance of science-backed formulation in hemp beverages, where ingredient interactions, ratios, and dosage all play a role.

New Research Explores CBD and L-Theanine Combination

A study published in Biomolecules & Therapeutics examined the effects of CBD and L-theanine, an amino acid commonly associated with relaxation, in a caffeine-induced sleep disturbance mouse model.

Researchers evaluated CBD and L-theanine individually and in combination at ratios of 1:1, 2:1, and 1:2.

The study found that combined administration reduced sleep onset latency and increased total sleep duration compared with single-ingredient treatments in sleep-disturbed mice. Researchers also observed changes in neurochemical markers, including increased serotonin, melatonin, and cortical GABA levels.

The researchers reported that the combination showed synergistic effects at lower doses under sleep-disturbed conditions.

However, the findings are preliminary. The study was conducted in mice, not humans, meaning additional research is needed before drawing conclusions about consumer outcomes or making functional claims.

Moving Beyond Ingredient Stacking

The functional beverage market has created significant opportunities for brands looking to differentiate. Consumers are increasingly seeking products designed around specific occasions, from evening relaxation routines to daytime focus and recovery.

This creates opportunities for hemp beverage companies to develop more targeted products. But combining CBD, L-theanine, magnesium, adaptogens, vitamins, and botanicals into a single beverage does not automatically create a better product. Without understanding how those ingredients behave as a system, increased complexity does not translate into improved performance.

A long list of functional ingredients can make a product appear more advanced, but without formulation intent, it often increases variability rather than improving outcomes.

Effective formulation requires understanding:

  1. How ingredients interact with each other
  2. What ratios create the desired effect
  3. Whether ingredients compete for absorption or stability
  4. How dosage impacts consumer experience
  5. Whether the combination has scientific support

A product with a long ingredient list may look impressive on a label, but without a formulation strategy, brands risk creating products that are difficult to validate, difficult to communicate their benefits, and less effective.

Ratios Could Become the Next Formulation Frontier

Ingredient interactions need to be considered alongside ingredient selection in food, beverage, and supplement development, as demonstrated in the CBD and L-theanine study, which evaluated different ratios.

As with emulsion systems in beverage development, performance depends not just on what is included, but on how components interact under real-world conditions such as dosage, stability, and manufacturing constraints.

For hemp beverages, this creates a competitive advantage rooted in validated formulation systems rather than ingredient selection alone.

The question may shift from:

“How much CBD is in the beverage?”

to:

“Why were these ingredients combined, and what evidence supports this formulation?”

Science Could Become a Brand Differentiator

As the hemp beverage category matures, consumers will likely become more knowledgeable about ingredients and more selective about the products they purchase.

In many ways, functional beverage development is shifting toward the same discipline used in infusion science—where compatibility, stability, and repeatability matter as much as the ingredients themselves.

This creates an opportunity for brands to lean into formulation strategy and educate consumers on the role of science-backed ingredient combinations.

That could mean working with scientists, ingredient suppliers, and formulation experts to evaluate:

  1. Ingredient compatibility
  2. Bioavailability
  3. Stability throughout shelf life
  4. Sensory impact
  5. Appropriate serving sizes
  6. Consumer use cases

The food and beverage industry has long relied on food scientists to develop products that deliver safe, consistent flavor, quality, and performance. Hemp beverages are moving in that same direction.

The Challenge: Balancing Science, Experience, and Regulation

Developing functional hemp beverages requires balancing multiple factors.

A formulation may look promising in a laboratory setting, but developers must also consider taste, manufacturing, shelf stability, cost, and regulatory requirements.

Cannabinoids add another layer of complexity. Because they are naturally hydrophobic, it often requires specialized emulsification systems to create a stable, consistent beverage.

Functional ingredients can also influence flavor. Botanicals, amino acids, and minerals may introduce bitterness or off-notes that require careful flavor development.

Flavor is often considered the most important element in a beverage, which is why flavor scientists play a central role in developing award-winning products.

The Future of Hemp Beverages May Be More Scientific

Research on CBD and L-theanine does not prove that this combination will become the next major sleep beverage category. But it does highlight a larger opportunity for hemp beverage companies.

As competition increases, formulation science may become one of the category’s biggest advantages.

The next phase of hemp beverages is about better science and formulations that deliver the experience they’re designed for.
